Speeding Accidents: Think Twice before You Put the Pedal to the Metal

 Posted on December 00,0000 in Car Accidents

Illinois personal injury lawyer, Illinois wrongful death attorney, Illinois car accident lawyer,Often when we hear about the impact speeding has on car accident statistics, we typically associate crashes with other vehicles on the roads. While speeding undeniably causes numerous pile-ups and other vehicle-to-vehicle collisions, it also poses a serious threat to pedestrians and those using other modes of transportation.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are at risk anytime they encounter traffic, but speeding drivers place them at an even greater risk. Before you put the pedal to the metal, consider these eye-opening facts according to the Illinois State Police:

  • Speeding is the cause for approximately 32 percent of fatal crashes;
  • It is often only one single vehicle that is responsible for a speed-related crash - it only takes one driver to cause serious damage; and
  • Since 1992, speed has been found to be one of the biggest factors in fatal crashes caused by driver error.

A significant percentage of speeding drivers who have caused collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians have been found to be driving under the influence. When it comes to speeding-related injuries and fatalities, though, the reason for a lead foot is never excusable. Willfully speeding, whether under the influence or not, can mean tragic consequences.

How You Can Protect Drivers and Pedestrians Alike

In an ideal world, we would be able to prevent all speed-related crashes. While that’s not realistic, reducing the number of speed-related accidents is certainly possible. Here are some ways you can be proactive and protect other drivers, pedestrians, and yourself all at the same time:

  • When road conditions are are not good, such as during stormy weather, reduce your speed and stay alert;
  • Do your best to match other traffic’s pace. If you find that most other vehicles are speeding around you, move to the right lane and stay there; and
  • When directly behind another vehicle, follow at a safe distance. The standard is to follow at a distance of at least two seconds.

Whether you are a driver or pedestrian, if you find yourself involved with a speed-related collision, you need to contact a knowledgeable Lake County car accident attorney. Call Salvi & Maher, LLP at 847-662-3303 to schedule a free consultation today.
