Posted on June 02,2023 in Personal Injury Lawsuits

shutterstock_1759785527-min.jpgWhether you are involved in a car accident, truck accident, or slip and fall accident, you may suffer from a serious head injury. Depending on how you hurt your head, the injury can impact your motor functions, emotions, and thoughts. If you suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), you may not be able to work or live your life as you did before your accident.

Signs of a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

While most head injuries from personal injuries and motor vehicle accidents are considered mild, they are the opposite for the victim. Common signs of a mild traumatic brain include the following:

  • Dizziness and balance loss

  • Headache

  • Excessive fatigue

  • Vomiting or nausea

  • Disorientation

  • Speech issues

  • Brief loss of consciousness ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes

  • Sensitivity to light and sound

  • Tinnitus (ear ringing)

  • Blurry vision

  • Odd taste in the mouth

  • Changes in the sense of smell

  • Mood swings

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Concentration and memory issues

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Common types of mild traumatic brain injuries include the following:

Concussion

This injury can manifest when the head receives a direct blow making the brain slide back and forth in the skull’s inner lining. It is a common injury in car accidents.

Contusion

A contusion is usually caused by a direct blow to the head, leading to a bruised brain. It can cause swelling and herniation.

Coup-Contrecoup

This injury refers to bruising on opposite sides of the brain, which can occur when the initial impact ('coup') makes the brain bounce on both sides of the skull. The second impact is called 'contrecoup’. The injury can occur whether the victim suffers from blunt force trauma or not.

Diffuse Axonal

This injury causes several lesions in the brain and is caused by a direct blow to the head. It is caused when the head whips back and forth violently, causing the brain to shake rigorously in the skull. The injury is usually identified via neuroimaging.

Penetrating Injury

This serious traumatic brain injury is caused by the penetration of a foreign object in the brain or a piece of bone or skull that breaks off from the impact and enters the brain. The impact can do serious damage to the tissue and nerves. This type of TBI requires surgery and skull repair.
